The Hiawatha Light Rail transports people through many unique and culturally diverse neighborhoods in south Minneapolis. Do you ever wonder what there is to do just blocks from the station? Local Minneapolis is a collection of maps and a directory showcasing local venues, parks, historical sites, shops, restaurants, and more that are within walking distance of the six South Minneapolis Light Rail Stations (from the Cedar-Riverside station to the 50th Street/Minnehaha Park station). Local Minneapolis will be a resource that potential and actual transit riders access to gain knowledge of and familiarity with the neighborhoods and points of interest around the LRT stations. There are six main categories featured: Food and Drink, Retail and Services, Historical Places, Greenspace and Public Art, Social Services, and Entertainment. By providing this information we encourage people to use mass transit and to hop off the train! Minneapolis is a great city to live in or to visit. The goal of Local Minneapolis is to reveal south Minneapolis to as many people as possible. We want people to get out into the neighborhoods, enjoy local venues, events, and patronize area sites. Local Minneapolis will foster community growth and participation in the local economy by only listing businesses and other sites that have ties to the local environment. You will find no chain stores or big box retailers here (sorry, Target). Each station has its own webpage and printable PDF that consists of a detailed map and directory with things to do, see, and learn within walking distance of up to ½ mile of each station. The website is becoming more dynamic with each update. We provide free advertising to local businesses and other places of interest (such as greenspaces and historical sites). There is dedicated webspace just waiting to be updated with your business’s information. We would love to get to know you! Please contact me regarding adding/updating information of your interesting place to the Local Minneapolis directory. |
